The Town of Essex, Vermont is seeking either a Deputy Clerk or a Town Clerk depending on the chosen candidate’s qualifications and experience. The chosen candidate will perform various levels of work in areas such as the maintenance and recording of official municipal records, land records, issuing various licenses and official specialized documents, working elections, processing liquor licenses, independently providing information to the general public and Town/Village departments and all other work as required. This position will also have degrees of responsibility with the treasurer functions, accepting and posting payments and reconciling daily cash receipts. In addition to typical Clerk functions, the chosen candidate will play an integral part in separating the shared Town of Essex and the Village of Essex Junction Clerk’s Office, and will work closely with the current Clerk. (The Village of Essex Junction is in the process of becoming an independent City, separate from the Town of Essex.)
If the candidate is hired as a Deputy Clerk, there is a likely possibility of the person becoming the Town Clerk within 18 to 24 months, provided they obtain the necessary training. The long term intent of this role is that, after the separation of the Town and Village becomes final, the Town Clerk will be responsible for the Clerk’s department of the Town of Essex. Should a Deputy Clerk be hired, the chosen individual will be given an 18-24 month transitional period during which they will have the opportunity to grow into the role of Town Clerk, with any final appointment being at the discretion of the Town Manager.

In general, the regular work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, hours may vary depending upon needs of the municipality. Occasional night meetings and weekend work may be necessary. The qualified Deputy Clerk candidate will have an Associate’s Degree in a relevant degree field and four years’ relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The qualified Town Clerk candidate will have at least five years’ experience and an Associate’s degree in relevant degree field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Full qualification requirements for each position can be found in the job descriptions. It is required that the chosen candidate obtain a notary public license within 6 months of hire.
The minimum starting salary for the Deputy Clerk position is $24.00 per hour, with the actual starting salary being based on qualifications and experience. The minimum starting salary for the Town Clerk Position is $68,000 per year, with the actual starting salary being based on qualifications and experience.
